Christian has been a hot topic recently, ever since he made his return to the ring to take on Randy Orton in an unsanctioned match. Many never thought they would see Captain Charisma in the ring like that again, if only for a moment. Whether that truly was his last dance or there is one more match yet to be had, Christian’s career is one for the record books. Here are ten facts about this bona-fide legend that you should know.

11 He Wasn't Always Christian

Many know him simply as ‘Christian,’ but Jey Reso has gone by a few other names during his time as a pro wrestler. When Christian moved from WWE to TNA in 2005, he was introduced as Christian Cage. This was actually a callback to the original ring name he used on the independent circuit. Christian revealed on his podcast how the name came to be - it’s a combination of Christian Slater and Nicolas Cage. That’s definitely better than Reso’s original gimmick, where he was known simply as ‘The Male Nurse.’ Thankfully, Christian realized that TLC matches were more exciting than checking someones temperature.

10 Christian & Edge Were A Team Before WWE

Forming a team known as High Impact, Edge and Christian worked all throughout the Canadian provinces together before eventually making it to WWE. Much of their time was spent in Canada, Michigan, and other northern territories where the two eventually formed a relationship with ECW legend Rhino. In 1997, Edge and Christian had a dark match for WWE that would lead to Edge signing with WWE full time. When this happened Edge immediately put in a good word for his best friend. Less than a year later, Reso cleared the developmental camp and was signed to his own contract.

9 He Studied Vampirism During His Time With The Brood

Greatness didn’t happen overnight for Edge and Christian, and one thing that pushed them towards greatness was their time in The Brood. Armed with a Vampire-gimmick, flames, and buckets of blood, this new faction of up-and-coming stars left a significant impression on the WWE Universe.

8 Christian Is One Of The Most Decorated Tag-Team Wrestlers Of All Time

It’s no secret that Christian is a great wrestler, but taking a closer look at the stats on his resume really paints a clear picture. Christian is a 9-time tag team champion. This means that out of every wrestler to ever step foot in a WWE ring, only two individuals have one the titles more times than Christian; Billy Gunn (10) and Edge (12), respectively.  7 of those reigns came with Edge, the second most ever for one tag team. It’s not just tag team gold. Christian has won over 20 major championships in total between WWE and TNA, making him one of the most decorated stars of all time.

7 The Infamous 'X' Symbol Was Created For His TLC Matches

Many things have to be taken into consideration for a standard wrestling match to go off without a hitch. Add tables, ladders, and chairs into the mix, and you can forget about things going exactly as planned. Throwing caution to the wind, Edge and Christian proved that their bodies were a sacrifice worth making on the path to stardom. This left the chance for injuries wide open, so a system was put into place. Edge revealed on their podcast that the ‘X’ symbol that referees use to signify a legit injury started with their TLC matches. This was a way to let wrestlers and other employees in the back know that they were unharmed and is a system that continues to this day across wrestling.

6 Christian Struggled As A Singles Wrestler

Struggle was the name of the game for Christian after he split with Edge, at least at first. In interviews and podcasts since his retirement, Christian revealed that he was very apprehensive to split with his trusted partner.

He would leave WWE in 2005 after his contract expired and set out to prove himself elsewhere.

5 'Captain Charisma’ Almost Walked Out Of TNA

After arriving on the scene in TNA, it was clear that Christian had something to prove. Some of the best years of Christians career happened in TNA. He captured the NWA World Title not once but twice, had thrilling battles with the likes of Samoa Joe and Kurt Angle, and even represented TNA in the Tokyo Dome at Wrestle Kingdom. One of his partners in that match was AJ Styles, someone who many consider to be the franchise player of TNA. In an interview with AJ on Christians ‘Pod of Awesomeness,’ Christian revealed that he almost walked out on TNA during some of the company’s darker days. “If you got up, I was gone,” Christian said in regards to a town-hall meeting the two were both present for. While Christian served out the remainder of his contract, both he and Styles eventually left TNA in the wake of greater troubles for the promotion.

4 Christian Was Originally Supposed To Retire Edge

Captain Charisma’s confidence was at an all-time high after proving himself as a main-event level talent in TNA. By 2011, Christian was entangled with Randy Orton in a bitter feud for the World Title after Edge’s shocking retirement forced him to relinquish the belt. These events were for sure not planned ahead. In fact, Christian revealed that the original plan’s for Edge would have featured Captain Charisma retiring the Rated-R Superstar. While Christian’s feud with Orton was certainly excellent, it’s hard to not think about what could have been.

3 WWE Never Formally Announced His Retirement

Usually in the case of a WWE legend like Christian, a retirement is a cause for celebration and fanfare. Such was not the case for Christian, who after suffering multiple concussions in a few short years, was quietly forced into retirement. After winning a #1 Contender’s match for Big E’s Intercontinental Title, Christian suffered what would be his final concussion and retired from in-ring competition in 2014.

Many believe that due to a controversial lawsuit involving concussions and former WWE stars, WWE wished to keep Christian’s retirement under wraps and did not make the news public. It wasn’t until Jerry Lawler referred to Christian as retired during an episode of RAW that an official statement was made regarding his status as an in-ring performer.

2 Christian’s Unsanctioned Match Was His First In Six Years

1

On the June 15th episode of Monday Night RAW, Christian made his return to the ring in an unsanctioned match against longtime rival Randy Orton. Legends come back for one-offs all the time, but there was something truly intriguing about Christian’s return to the ring in June. After all, Christian was forced to retire due to concussions, something WWE has taken very seriously over the past few years. Christian had previously revealed that he was on WWE’s No-Touch list, a strict list of stars that are not cleared for any physical contact. While the match was more of an angle than an actual match, it was still more physicality than we ever expected to see out of Captain Charisma again. Only time will tell if Christian is able to make a return to the ring for one more match.
