World Championship Wrestling had a lot of great things about it like the red-hot nWo storyline and their influential cruiserweight division, both of which happened in the late 1990s. Of course, there are lots of reasons people like to make fun of the defunct promotion, most of which were pretty fair -- namely stuff like keeping the younger stars down in favor of aging egomaniacs and turning great ideas like the nWo into tired cliches.

But all that is actually kind of depressing. Why not laugh at WCW in a more fun way -- via the magic of memes? With that in mind, let’s take a look at some WCW-based memes that might elicit a giggle or two.

10 The Man of 1,004 Memes

Chris Jericho is going to go down in history as a legendary talent -- one who’s not only been able to reinvent himself over the years, but also managed to stay relevant and memeworthy before memes were even a thing. Long before “A little bit of the bubbly,” Jericho was entertaining audiences on WCW Monday Nitro, trolling “The Man of 1,000 Holds” Dean Malenko by claiming that he knew 1,004 holds, and subsequently reading them on television. As the meme states, they were mostly armbars.

9 Perfection

This is a common three-tier meme format, using a famous scene from X-Men First Class where Magneto (Michael Fassbender) encourages the shapeshifter Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) to show him her true form, meaning her blue skin and red hair. This format is often used to reach an incongruous punchline, like in this case where it goes from amateur wrestling to The Rock vs. Stone Cold at WrestleMania XIX to the beloved and influential Nintendo 64 video game WCW/nWo Revenge.

8 Randy Hogan

Believe it or not, Randy Hogan is actually a real person who wrestled for WCW. Surely named with the same philosophy that brought fans “Vincent” and “V.K. Wallstreet,” The Randster was strictly a jobber his whole career, losing to the stars of WCW, Mid-Atlantic, and NWA in the late ‘80s with his Hulk Hogan look-alike gimmick.

He even wrestled for WWF in the early ‘90s as “Scott Colton,” sporting a look that didn’t draw comparisons to the more famous Hogan.

7 Vince Russo

Here’s a solid use of Sudden Clarity Clarence for WCW meme purposes. As much as people say it’s the Fingerpoke of Doom that led to WCW’s downfall, but it shouldn’t be understated how WWE Attitude Era writer Vince Russo went over to WCW sometime after that and imbued the show with crude humor, ridiculous gimmicks, and way too many worked shoots. This has prompted many fans to think that WCW’s decline was engineered by Vince McMahon, sending Russo as a sleeper agent to bring down the organization from within. Wrestling fans sure love their conspiracy theories.

6 #WCW

Wrestling fans have a unique struggle when it comes to social media. Every Wednesday, fans can see the hashtag #WCW trending on Twitter, Instagram, and so on. Turns out this doesn’t stand for World Championship Wrestling, but rather Woman Crush Wednesday, where people online share photos of women they admire. This meme is reacting to that despite the fact that this is not WCW being depicted, but rather nWo. Anyway, close enough.

5 The Burial

Sting was the final nail in WCW’s coffin when he finally showed up in WWE, setting up a match with Triple H at WrestleMania 31. The match is a blast, but Triple H ultimately won, yet another in what fans have termed “burials” of H’s opponents. His burial of former WCW talent is legendary, as he’s had controversial wins over a few of the notables. Goldberg’s burial is debatable, but his win over Booker T was the source of much criticism, and his matches with Scott Steiner are pretty reviled.

4 Legacy Characters

The meme text is covering up the guy on the bottom, but if you look closely, you’ll see that’s Goldust whose mouth Curtis Axel is stretching open (?). World Championship Wrestling historians will remember that both Axel’s dad, Curt Hennig, and Goldust’s dad, Dusty Rhodes, were both members of the nWo, and often at the same time.

One could, however, take issue with the accuracy of the meme, because at least fans remember Mr. Perfect being in the nWo, while Dusty’s membership was totally forgotten.

3 Savage and Vicious

Here’s a meme that is applicable to situations outside of wrestling. You see, the joke is that Randy Savage and Sid Vicious are in the same picture together, and their last names are adjectives as well as their kayfabe surnames. The only thing is that the viewer of the meme would need to recognize Sid Vicious and Randy Savage. The latter especially might be difficult, as it’s not the classic colorful Macho.

2 T-Shirts

This is a great screenshot. Hollywood Hogan looks so happy to be showing off his friends, Scott Hall and Kevin Nash. It makes Hogan kind of seem like a hanger-on to the group, like a Disco Inferno or a Hornswoggle to D-Generation X. This is also notable because it reminds fans of the one time Hollywood Hogan did not act in his best interest, and only his best interests.

1 Incredibly Accurate

In 1996, amid nWo’s takeover of WCW, Sting disappeared and subsequently returned as a seemingly supernatural vigilante with a newer, darker look suited to mainstream wrestling’s shift to less kid-friendly content in the late ‘90s. What’s funny about this reinvention, as the meme would suggest, is that Sting’s look was totally cribbed from The Crow, a movie that came out two years earlier. There’s a reason people often refer to this look as “Crow Sting” despite Sting being scorpion themed.
