The Rock made a surprising return to WWE TV on SmackDown this week and got a pretty electrifying reaction when his music hit. Between an increasingly busy Hollywood schedule - when actors and writers aren't striking - and an injury he suffered the last time he wrestled, most fans assumed Rock had probably already had his last match. The People's Champ even said he had retired from in-ring competition during an interview. Now it seems anything is on the table.

Locked In For WrestleMania

A few hours before appearing on SmackDown, Rock told Pat McAfee that he had a handshake agreement to wrestle Roman Reigns in the main event of WrestleMania 39. That didn't happen, but Rock added it wasn't his schedule or a worry that he might get hurt stopping him from stepping back in the ring. He's simply waiting to be presented with something new and worthwhile, and it seems a match against his Tribal Chief cousin might well be that.

To top everything off, Rock hinted he'll finally have that match at WrestleMania 40 in Philadelphia. Most people who heard that likely jumped for joy, but probably not Cody Rhodes. Although the match isn't set in stone, it seems almost nailed on that the plan is for Rhodes to get his rematch against Reigns at WrestleMania 40 and "finish the story". Despite Rock returning to TV and hinting at a WrestleMania main event, Rhodes getting his rematch is apparently still the priority.

Cody Rhodes Is The Priority

That's according to wrestling leaker, BoozerWrasslin. The account claims that beyond setting up a future meeting with The Rock to discuss story options, there is currently no plan in place for him to come in and wrestle Reigns. For right now, at least, Rhodes is still the priority. That presumably means Reigns vs. Rhodes 2 will still be the match that closes night two of WrestleMania 40, probably with Rhodes winning and being the one who finally brings the curtain down on what will have been three and a half years of domination for The Head of the Table by then.

I think WWE has a few options here. Ever since people have floated the idea of a Reigns vs. Rock match, I've been in the camp of fans who firmly believe the title really doesn't need to be involved. If WWE agrees with that sentiment, then either Reigns vs. Rock can wait until after WrestleMania 40, or Reigns can drop the title to Rhodes before then, maybe at Royal Rumble or Crown Jewel. Reigns reportedly won't be wrestling again until WWE returns to Saudi Arabia. If it's the latter, that frees Reigns up for a WrestleMania main event against Rock without the title on the line.
