It wasn't long ago Edge said he wanted to have his last match in WWE sometime in the summer of 2023. It wasn't clear when that would be, but the WWE Superstar knew his time was running out as an active competitor and he felt it was only right that he finish his in-ring career off in Canada. Being from Ontario, Canada, and having his backstory start at WrestleMania VI where he was shown in the crowd watching the Ultimate Warrior vs. Hulk Hogan, it seems only fitting that he end things where they started. That's why an announcement about a show in Toronto in August seems to have many believing that August 18, 2023, could be the end of the road for Edge. John Clark of WrestleZone tweeted, "#WWE announced they will be returning to Toronto for a live edition of Friday Night SmackDown on Friday, August 18. #SmackDown#WWEToronto" and the tweet has gone viral, many thinking this is the precursor to an announcement that this will be Edge's last match.
Edge returned in 2020 at the Royal Rumble. Leaving in 2023 would be just over three years that he was active again in WWE. There are conflicting reports about what type of contract Edge is under as it could be based on time or on the number of appearances and matches he's scheduled to have. But, he did say at a recent live event in August of 2022, “I’m looking at the calendar, and we usually come here in August. So next August, I plan on seeing each and every one of you. And in a perfect world, we all say goodbye to each other that night. Hey, but that’s okay man, this is the place for me to do it, okay?"
Will Edge Say Goodbye That Night?
If Edge is going out at a live event in Toronto, one has to wonder if WWE will make a special event of it and put it on WWE Network or Peacock to see if his farewell match would generate viewers. If he officially retires in Toronto in August, that might not be the end of his run in the industry, but it certainly would be the end of an era in professional wrestling.
