Former WWE referee Jimmy Korderas has suggested that both John Cena and CM Punk could be convinced to return to WWE if the company tries bringing them back to help younger talent come to the fore.

Korderas served as a WWE match official from 1987 to 2009 and, speaking on his Reffin Rant series on Twitter, discussed current stars using social media to call out wrestling greats. Karrion Kross recently called out John Cena via such a platform, with Will Ospreay also making attempts to get Punk back.

While Korderas isn't sure what might come out of the social media taunts, he reckons the veterans could be coaxed back if it means they will help put young talent over.

"It seems to be an ongoing thing where current wrestlers, people who are doing it right now, guys and gals, are calling out former superstars, big superstars, on social media, trying to entice them back or trying to get the rub on social media," he said in quotes transcribed by Sportskeeda. "I don’t know what it is. Karrion Kross, of course, calling out John Cena. And, of course, Will Ospreay calling out CM Punk.

"This is interesting to me because both CM Punk, under the right circumstances, and John Cena, again under the right circumstances, I can see coming back and helping young talent out and elevating them. At the same time, it almost feels like it’s a desperate move from these young fellas to try and get a name for themselves and establish themselves on social media and generate some interest. Whether it works or not, I guess remains to be seen!"

Cena & Punk Are Two Of The Biggest Champs In WWE History

Cena and Punk shared one of the most highly-rated matches in WWE history when they faced off at Money in the Bank in 2011. The angle made it so that Punk would have to leave WWE for good and take the WWE title with him if he won, which he did.

The bout was the first one to get a five-star rating from Dave Meltzer since 1997.

As to whether Korderas's theory holds up is left up to time to tell but we don't imagine WWE not making the most of either Cena or Punk's star power should either of them ever decide to return. Cena, of course, is still tied to WWE and should return for a match at some point or the other but Punk has been out for seven years.

It's worth noting that Cena's acting career would dictate what he does with WWE while Punk has already claimed it would take a lot of money and a really interesting storyline to lure him back.
