Though AEW hasn't made it official, the former Sasha Banks, Mercedes Mone, will be making her debut with the company at the "Big Business" episode of Dynamite on March 13 from her billed hometown of Boston. It's a debut that almost didn't happen, however, as during a match in New Japan Pro Wrestling at their Resurgence show, Mone lost the tournament finals for the Strong Women's Championship to Willow Nightingale. It's not a loss that was supposed to happen, but a change was made after Mone suffered a brutal ankle injury during the match, one so severe that a doctor had to carry her to the back.
That match was ten months ago and Mone hasn't wrestled since, but now she's back. As she gets ready for her grand comeback, she spoke to Evan Mack of the Kick Rocks Wrestling Podcast about just how bad her injury was. She said:
"I've been posting my training videos. I've been training really really hard with Tyler Breeze at Flatbacks and Shawn Spears. Shout out to Hybrid School with [Sho] Funaki in San Antonio, and New Japan Dojo in LA. I've been working so hard to get back to this place that I love.
"Because little do people know, I was told that this is a career ending injury. And I screamed at my doctor and surgeon. I said, 'No, it's not.' I'm going to come back really soon and I'm going to have just the greatest time, the greatest matches, the greatest career that I've had yet, because I see it and I feel it, I know it." Mercedes Mone is debuting in AEW at the perfect time. Her Boston debut, in front of a big audience, will be a must-see moment, but it's the weeks after that really matter. AEW is at a make-or-break moment. Ratings and attendance are way down for the company, but they have been given new life thanks to the media coverage surrounding Sting's retirement match at Revolution, the new onscreen setup, and the signings of not only Mone, but Will Ospreay and Kazuchika Okada.
It feels as if someone as bright as Mercedes is too big for AEW, but that can only be good for the promotion. In WWE, Mone has wrestled most of their roster countless times. In Tony Khan's promotion, she can become the face of the women's division, whether it be facing off with her friend Saraya, getting revenge on Willow Nightingale, or going after Toni Storm's AEW Women's World Championship.
