One of AEW's most entertaining acts is Orange Cassidy, the sunglasses wearing, denim clad wrestler who is known for being super lazy and uninterested in everything, including his matches. His gimmick is based on the character of Andy, played by Paul Rudd, in the 2001 comedy Wet Hot American Summer. Cassidy even comes out to "Jane" by Jefferson Starship, the same song that opens the film. In an interview with William Mullally of Esquire to promote the release of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Paul Rudd was asked if knew about Orange Cassidy. Mullally even showed Rudd a photo of the AEW wrestler. Rudd smiled, perplexed, and said he didn't know who Orange Cassidy was. “That’s amazing. How did I not know this? Thank you for telling me.”
When Orange Cassidy found out that his hero now knew he existed, he took to Twitter, where he was overcome with emotion and ecstatically raved about how much the news meant to him.
Orange Cassidy's Gimmick Has Made Him An AEW Fan Favorite
With his smaller stature, Orange Cassidy needed something to help him stick out among more physically imposing wrestlers. His current gimmick does just that. He gets the biggest cheers when his music hits, and when you look out into the stands, you'll always see several kids dressed up like him in matching aviator sunglasses and jean jackets. The gimmick's popularity has led to a lot of success, including a feud with Chris Jericho and a run as the current AEW All-Atlantic Champion. Though he now speaks a little more than he used to, much of the gimmick remains unchanged, and fans have shown no sign that they're even close to bored of it.
