On Monday Night Raw, Sasha Banks won WWE Raw Women’s Championship after Asuka was counted out after she ran to the aid of her best friend Kairi Sane, who was being viciously attacked by Bayley. The decision to crown Banks seems to have been decided in the past week since Asuka was expected to enter SummerSlam as champion.

Prior to the win, Asuka had Banks positioned for the Asuka Lock but watched in horror as Bayley attacked Kairi Sane backstage. She was left with the choice of saving her friend or saving her title. After Asuka ran up the entrance ramp to help Sane, the referee counted to 10, handing Banks was not only the victory but also the championship.

Recently, WWE hinted at a split between Bayley and Banks, though there have been no signs of problems between the two. Now, Banks is expected to take on Bayley sometime after SummerSlam. Having won her fifth Raw Women’s Championship, Banks now holds the record for the maximum reigns with the Raw Women’s Championship.

Banks, 28, made her professional wrestling debut in 2010 at Chaotic Wrestling under the ring name Mercedes KV. She eventually became the longest-reigning Chaotic Wrestling Women's Champion in history by breaking Alexxis's previous record of 182 days. After a stint on the independent circuit, she signed with WWE in 2012. Her first televised win on NXT was on the January 23, 2013 episode against Alicia Fox. Banks is a first cousin of rapper Snoop Dogg, who helped her develop her in-ring persona.

Although she was favored to win the 2020 Women's Royal Rumble match, she was absent from the event and several episodes of SmackDown before it, leading to speculation that she had been injured. Banks returned on the February 28 episode of SmackDown where she joined Bayley in a tag team to defeat Naomi and Lacey Evans.

In the last few months, Banks and Bayley have conquered the women's division. They co-hold the WWE Women's Tag Team Championships and Bayley won the SmackDown Women's Championship. Banks win this week gives the team the uncontested reign of WWE.
